How do you keep yourself safe from disinfectant spray products?

Cleaning and disinfecting surfaces in your home, workplace and healthcare facilities is more important now than ever before since the COVID-19 pandemic. We know that regularly cleaning and disinfecting will help to prevent the spread of germs and help break the chain of infection, but with any cleaning process, it is important to plan and have all of the necessary tools, equipment, and products that are required before starting. While the cleaning process is important, some disinfectants can be hazardous to your health if you don’t use them properly. To help you keep you and everyone around you safe, we have put together some disinfectant safety tips that everyone should be following.

Cleaning, sanitising or disinfecting?

Most people think that cleaning, sanitising and disinfecting are the same thing, but they are very different:

Cleaning – this is the step where you remove any obvious debris such as crumbs, dirt and dust from the surface or objects. When you clean, you usually use soap or detergent mixed with water to physically clean off the debris, but you may not necessarily be killing germs.

Sanitising – this can be done by either cleaning, disinfecting, or both! Sanitising means that you are reducing the number of germs present to a safe level, and what is considered safe is detailed in the public health requirements and regulations depending on the setting. For example, there are sanitising procedures for restaurants and other facilities that prepare food. The method that you use to sanitise will also vary depending on your needs. You might mop a floor using a mop, a disinfectant chemical, and water, but you might use a dishwasher to sanitise the dishes.

Disinfecting – this is the step where you use specially designed chemicals to kill germs and pathogens on the surface or object. You can get wipes, solutions, or vetdisinfectant spray and you must read the labels carefully as you may need to leave disinfectant for a minimum amount of time for it to work properly.

How to disinfect safely

·     Always read and follow the directions on the label of the disinfectant product carefully to ensure safe and effective use.

·     Wear any recommended personal protective equipment (PPE) to help protect your skin and eyes from any potential splashes. Examples include gloves and goggles.

·     Leave the disinfectant on the surface for the correct amount of time to ensure that the germs have all been killed. This is called the contact time, and you need to read the label correctly to ensure that the surface has been disinfected properly.

·   Ensure that there is good ventilation if you are using the disinfectant indoors. You could open the windows and doors to allow fresh air to enter, or use a fan if there are no windows available.

·        If the direction tells you to dilute the product, you should use water that is room temperature.

·      You need to ensure that you store chemicals and chemical cleaners out of the reach of pets and children.

·        Do not mix chemical products together as this can cause some nasty chemical reactions!

·    Do not eat or drink any disinfection products or apply them directly to your skin as they can cause serious harm.

·    Immediately after disinfecting, ensure that you wash your hands with soap and water for at least 20 seconds to get rid of any residue.

·    Do not overuse disinfectant products as you can risk promoting the growth of resistance in the pathogens.
